Hedge against COVID-19, other chronic diseases
COVID-19: Even though we’re all tired of hearing about it and dealing with it, it’s going to be a part of life for a while.
As we learn more about this novel coronavirus and how COVID-19 affects us, one common theme emerged throughout. We know older people and those with underlying medical conditions are at greater risk for developing more severe symptoms, according to the Mayo Clinic.
And short of locking ourselves in our homes for the next few months, there is no way to fully avoid exposure to the virus. So how can we best protect ourselves?
Turns out there is a simple and effective way: exercise. Specifically, cardiovascular exercise.
Researchers at the University of Virginia released medical findings that “strongly support” the possibility that exercise can prevent or at least reduce the severity of severe complications from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, a major cause of death among COVID-19 patients.
Simply put, exercise which builds and supports muscles helps the body produce antioxidants that help protect our bodies from disease. Furthermore, these findings also showed that those same antioxidants also helped limit the damage to vital organs caused by other illnesses, such as diabetes or heart disease.
Guess what CrossFit’s 10 components of fitness are? Cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, speed, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.
Would you look at that. The perfect recipe for helping increase your fitness, thus providing a hedge against sickness and chronic disease.
